About the teacher
I am a professional bassist and music educator in my mid-30s, originally from New York and now based in Copenhagen. I hold a Bachelor of Music in Music Theory and Composition from New York University and have worked professionally as both a musician and educator in New York City, Washington, D.C., New Orleans, and the Hudson Valley.
I have played bass for more than 20 years and performed hundreds of gigs throughout my career. My playing spans funk, jazz, fusion, rock, progressive music, and classical repertoire. My primary instrument is six-string electric bass, but I have extensive experience with 4- and 5-string basses, as well as both fretted and fretless instruments. My formal training on electric bass has included private study with respected bassists Russ Rodgers and Moto Fukushima.
I have taught music professionally for several years, both in person and remotely, working with students from young children through adults. At the height of my private teaching career, I maintained a studio of approximately 50–60 students, teaching bass and guitar from beginner through advanced levels. My teaching experience also includes teaching music composition at a private high school in New York, along with private instrumental instruction.
About the lessons
My teaching starts with you. This means getting to know what music you enjoy listening to, what your goals are on the instrument, and how you learn best. I believe strong fundamentals are important, but they should be developed in a way that keeps you interested in playing and helps you build your own musical identity.
On bass, I will work with you on technique, rhythm and groove, fretboard knowledge, ear training, reading, improvisation, music theory, and understanding the role of the bass both within an ensemble and as a solo instrument. Above all, our lessons will be shaped around what you want to accomplish. If you are preparing for a conservatory audition, I can help you develop the skills and repertoire necessary to get there. If you simply want to learn the bass lines from your favorite songs and understand why those lines sound so good, we will focus on that.
My goal is not simply to teach you exercises, but to give you the tools and confidence to understand music, play with other musicians, and ultimately develop into the kind of player you want to become.
Lessons are available in your home in Copenhagen or remotely via Zoom. For online lessons, I use a multi-microphone audio setup so you can clearly hear both the instrument and everything I am demonstrating and explaining.
At the end of every lesson, I will leave you with a clear list of material to practice before we meet again, so you always know what to work on and how to keep progressing between lessons.
One thing to note: much like learning an instrument, my Danish is still a work in progress! For now, I teach all lessons in English.
