About the lessons
My understanding of piano pedagogy is that we should begin by exploring the composer’s own interpretation of the music itself. When embarking upon a piece or section of a work, we must first analyse the composition: how should we convey dynamics, tempo, emotion, and the underlying thematic intent? Only then should we consider the requisite technical skills and finger exercises to support this interpretation.
What, then, is the composer’s own musical style? Popular music? Classical? And so forth. How should we approach performing such styles? This requires a layered teaching approach. Regarding composition, we should not remain confined to strict notation training. I am keen to guide students into creating music that interests them, fostering discussions in a workshop-like format. This could encompass electronic music, film scores, or more rational, logical musical engineering.
