About Rafael
I’m a jazz drummer, composer, and educator from Portugal, currently based in Copenhagen. After starting drums at age 10, I pursued formal jazz studies at the Conservatório da Quinta das Flores and later completed a degree in Jazz Drums at the Conservatório de Música de Lisboa.
Alongside my development as a performer, I’ve always been deeply drawn to teaching, and over the years, I’ve built experience working with students of various ages and levels.
Currently, I teach private drum lessons both independently and through Syddansk Musikkonservatorium, guiding students from beginners to more experienced players. My pedagogical approach centers on creativity, listening, and personal expression. I aim to create a supportive learning environment that encourages exploration, while also focusing on technique, coordination, and musical understanding.
About the lessons
In my teaching, I emphasize musicality, creativity, and active listening. I aim to help each student develop a personal connection to the instrument by fostering curiosity and encouraging their own musical voice. Technique, coordination, time feel, and dynamic control are central to my lessons, but I always place them in a musical context—using grooves, improvisation, and real-life playing situations to make learning engaging and relevant.
Since I teach only drums, my approach is tailored specifically to the needs of drummers at different levels. With beginners, I focus on building a solid technical foundation and a strong sense of rhythm through fun, accessible exercises. With more experienced students, I work on expanding their vocabulary, deepening their listening skills, and refining their sound and touch on the instrument. Regardless of level, I prioritize creating a supportive and inspiring environment where students feel confident to experiment and grow.
